In 2013, Staff Sergeant Julian McDonald sent Layka, a military dog, to clear a dangerous building in Afghanistan. Layka was injured during the mission, losing one leg. After a grueling seven-hour operation, Layka was saved but left with only three legs. Despite this setback, Layka remained enthusiastic about life. She later sustained another injury to her remaining leg, which put her at even greater risk. Fortunately, McDonald, determined to repay Layka for saving his life, adopted her and she became a loving companion to his family. McDonald plans to give Layka a peaceful and happy retirement.
